A–C

Asphalt Shingles
A common roofing material made of fiberglass or organic mat coated with asphalt and topped with granules for protection.
Blistering
Bubbles that form on shingles due to trapped moisture or poor ventilation, which can reduce shingle lifespan.

D–F

Decking
The wooden base of a roof (often plywood or OSB) to which shingles and underlayment are attached.
Drip Edge
Metal flashing installed along roof edges to direct water into gutters and prevent damage to the fascia.
Fascia
The horizontal board at the edge of the roof where gutters are attached. Protects the roof and interior from moisture.

G–L

Gutters
Drainage channels that direct rainwater off the roof and away from the home’s foundation.
Granules
Mineral-coated materials embedded on shingles to provide UV protection, color, and fire resistance.
Hand Nailing
The process of installing roofing nails manually rather than with a nail gun, often seen as a higher-precision method.
Ice & Water Shield
A waterproof underlayment installed along eaves, valleys, and roof penetrations to prevent leaks from ice dams or wind-driven rain.
Impact Resistance
A roof’s ability to withstand hail or falling debris. Materials are rated Class 1–4, with Class 4 offering the most protection.
Laminated Shingles
Also called architectural shingles; thicker asphalt shingles with a dimensional appearance and better durability than 3-tab.

M–R

Metal Roofing
A long-lasting, energy-efficient roofing material available in panels or shingles. Ideal for durability and fire resistance.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board)
Engineered wood panels used for roof decking, made from compressed wood strands and adhesives.
Pitched Roof
A roof with a slope to facilitate water runoff, as opposed to a flat roof.
Pipe Boot
A type of flashing that seals around plumbing vent pipes to prevent water intrusion.
Rafters
Inclined wooden beams that support the roof structure and create its shape.
Rake Edge
The inclined edge of a gable roof. Rake flashing helps prevent water infiltration from wind-driven rain.
Roof Repair
Fixing isolated roof issues such as missing shingles or small leaks without replacing the whole roof.
Roof Replacement
Stripping the old roofing system and installing an entirely new one, including underlayment, flashing, and shingles.
Roof Inspection
A comprehensive evaluation of the roof’s condition to identify wear, damage, and needed repairs.

S–Z

Roof Financing
Flexible payment plans offered to homeowners for roof repairs or replacement without upfront cost.
Standing Seam Metal Roof
A sleek metal roofing system with raised vertical seams that interlock, ideal for durability and modern aesthetics.
Soffit
The underside of the roof overhang, typically vented to allow airflow into the attic.
Solar Roofing
A roof system that incorporates photovoltaic panels or shingles to generate electricity while protecting the home.
Starter Shingles
Special shingles placed along eaves and rakes as the first line of defense against wind uplift.
Synthetic Underlayment
A durable, water-resistant material used beneath shingles for better protection than traditional felt paper.
Tab
The exposed portion of a 3-tab asphalt shingle that gives the roof its look.
Underlayment
A protective layer between the shingles and the roof deck, preventing moisture infiltration.
Valley
The internal angle where two roof slopes meet. Special flashing or materials are used here to prevent leaks.
Ventilation
The process of exchanging air in the attic to prevent heat and moisture buildup, improving energy efficiency and roof longevity.
Warranty
A manufacturer’s or contractor’s guarantee for roofing materials and/or workmanship over a defined period.
Wind Damage
Roof damage caused by strong winds, including lifted shingles, missing pieces, or exposed underlayment.
