As The Heat Persists, How To Stay Cool Without Breaking The Bank

As summer rages on, fighting the heat gets more and more expensive. Especially in older, less energy efficient homes, the more your AC pushes against the heat the costlier it gets.

We are still far from Autumn and with school starting almost in the middle of Summer, bank accounts can get pretty strained.

If your a homeowner, upgrading your home with energy efficient windows and doors is a great start but the work doesn’t stop there.

To maximize your energy efficiency consider the following:

Set your thermostat to 78 degrees

AC counts for 50% or more (especially now) of your bill. Installing and using ceiling fans will help keep you cool and comfortable (just be sure to turn of fans in unoccupied rooms).

Watch the hot water

Hot water is an energy hog, so try using the cold or warm settings on your washing machine. Lower your water heater to 125 degrees which is adequate for most (most come preset at 140 degrees!)). If you leave for a couple of days, turn off the water heater.

Keep your HVAC system well maintained

Service your unit at least once a year. Change air filters on a regular basis

Get a programmable or smart thermostat

Widely available and affordable, the new smart thermostats aren’t just cool tech, they can save you a heap of money!

Make Sure You Have Adequate Insulation

Call a roof contractor to have your roof, attic, attic stairway, attached garage walls, basement, and other areas checked for proper insulation. A roof contractor will be able to identify not only insulation levels but identify other areas that could contribute to excessive energy costs like roof leaks.

Finally, prune back shrubs that may block airflow to your air conditioner or heat pump.
